Cardiac Success Stories

Thelma Peter Brock | Age: 72 | Triple Bypass

“Thanks to a broken wrist that I needed surgery for, they discovered an abnormality I had in my heart. I feel so lucky because I got the repair done to both. As a retired OR nurse, and after 44 years helping others overcome serious health issues you know what’s to come when the tables are turned. It’s a completely different experience. My husband, my daughter and my family have been so incredibly supportive. And I love the people in Cardiac Rehab. They have been a blessing.”

Melvin Jay Liwag | Age: 45 | Heart Attack – Single Bypass

“I had a heart condition all along without realizing it. Enlarged arteries; so enlarged that there wasn’t a stent large enough to place. We put it in the hands of the Lord and He allowed me to survive. I tell our friends and loved ones to be aware of your body. We have become more educated about the importance of alleviating stress, losing weight, and eating well. It’s about making simple choices in the way you eat and exercise, and about being consistent with your choices. My experience at Osceola Regional was incredible. Now I’m on the right meds and on the right path to recovery. I have to be on meds for the rest of my life, but I have a lot to look forward to. Family and health, that’s all that matters.”

Scott William Grasley | Age: 61 | Triple Bypass

“It all started with a stiff neck to then find out that 3 of my arteries were extremely blocked. I was at ease the entire time because the doctor and his team at Osceola Regional kept me posted and updated every step of the way. They were truly fantastic. And the ladies in Cardiac Rehab have been wonderful. I now go there two times a week, and they are like a family. Slowly but surely I’m regaining my strength so I can fully enjoy being a grandfather for the first time in the Spring.”

Mayra Josefina Carranza | Age: 59 | Bypass

“Listen to what your doctor says! I didn’t realize how bad I was in terms of my lifestyle. Now, I exercise with more consistency, I watch my diet and I stay away from sugar. I’m so thankful to my family for being there for me, and to the ladies in Rehab who are so encouraging in a very positive way. My faith sustains me. God keeps me going!

Glen Sapp | Age: 53 | 3 Strokes, Triple Bypass and Multiple Percutaneous Coronary Interventions

“You just don’t get up and walk away from a stroke unless you have had the best care from the onset. Osceola Regional works like a well-greased machine. They leave nothing to chance. The doctors make the nurses feel like they are a key part of their medical performance. The housekeeping is some of the best I have ever seen. They sweep every single room and empty the trash at a certain time like clockwork. As I slowly recover, I thank my Lord Jesus and my dear friend John Mertz who sat by my side day in and day and day out until I pulled through.”

Lia Maita | Age: 84 | Aortic Valve Repair and Mitral Valve Repair

“I had been receiving treatment for atrial fibrillation, and it was just a matter of time before I developed stiffness in my aorta. As a result, I was getting fatigued very easily. My doctor was closely monitoring the condition of my aorta and eventually we scheduled the surgery. Family and friends have demonstrated an outpour of support through countless cards and prayers, and the medical and Rehab teams have been great. I’m a very active person and as I recover I want to get back to doing everything I enjoy doing without experiencing fatigue. But more importantly, I’m just hoping to live longer because I want to see my grandchildren graduate.”

Larry Poff | Age: 62 | Heart Attack – 1 Stent

“It was a day like any other. I was making breakfast and all of a sudden I broke out into a cold sweat, I felt a burning sensation overcome me chest pain and nausea. But then it subsided. I told my wife not to worry, to go ahead with her plans. A few minutes after she left my left arm started getting numb, so I decided to drive myself to the hospital. I was having a heart attack. My aorta was 95% blocked. They call it the widow-maker. My body was telling me there was something wrong leading up to that day. I felt fatigued all the time and not quite right. You need to listen to your body. Don’t wait. It’s your life. My wife and my daughter, who is a nurse, have been very supportive and the medical team at Osceola Regional was at the foot of the bed every hour running tests and checking up on me. After surgery, your body is changing and adjusting. This is a life-changing experience. That first day when I got home I sat down and realized everything was different. I said to myself, ‘Man, I’m feeling good.’ Now I receive a lot of encouragement from the team in Cardiac Rehab. I’m adjusting my eating habits, I’m exercising and I’m really enjoying my passion for fishing, woodworking and cooking. ”

Miguel Herrera | Age: 73 | Heart Attack – 1 Stent

“God slammed the door in my face twice. They had to resuscitate me two times after suffering a massive heart attack. There is no amount of money that can pay for the emotional support and care we received from my nurse Christina. She was able to make us remain at ease at all times. At first, I was very angry because my mobility was limited. But with the help of Cardiac Rehab, I was able to regain my life. It’s so important to complete your rehabilitation program. I’m a fighter. I’ve always been a fighter. And with my wife in my corner, I will continue to stand strong.”

Cardiac Success Stories

Denise Dwinnell | Age: 53| Mitral Valve Repair

“When I was a teenager I had to get checked because I kept passing out at school. I refused to take any mediation for my mitral valve condition and just lived my life knowing that I would eventually need to get it repaired. Every day I thanked God for yet another day. Then as I got older I started to have less energy and started to run out of breath very easily. I knew something wasn’t right; the time had come to schedule my heart surgery. The team at Osceola Regional was extraordinary. I feel like I have a whole new lease on life. My dad has been a tremendous support, and I found out how many friends I have and how much I am loved. I’m very focused on starting to skate with my niece again. I’ve always been a cool auntie but now I’m reenergized – so you better watch out!”

James Currie | Age: 62 | Congestive Heart Failure

“I knew something was wrong when I started blacking out...serious issues with my blood pressure. I appreciate Osceola Regional for everything they have done for me. Now, it’s my turn to pay it forward. A year ago I decided to grow out my beard. The best part is when children think I’m the real Santa when I’m dresses in regular clothing. It happens when I’m running errands; they approach me and start talking to me to their parent’s bewilderment. So I immediately jump into character. I even made my own Santa ID card! I do this because I have come to realize that being Santa is a 24/7 all year round job. Children become aware of my presence. They watch how I behave and I have to set a good example. Plus it’s such a joy to bring a little sunshine into people’s lives. I want to make a difference!”
